I have crabs. Hermit crabs, actually.

This is home to Hector, Ulysses, and Ajax, who are all Purple Pinchers. Hector is the largest, and is also a bully and was moderately insane when I got him. Ulysses was incredibly shy at first, but has gotten a lot more active since he switched to his current shell. Ajax was the last to join the Clan, he was acquired a few weeks after the initial pair, who were brought home from North Carolina.

I’m strangely fascinated by them. I’m fighting the urge to add more to the Clan. My rational self says, “Wait until you’re sure these three will do well in the new digs!” while my crab-addicted self says, “What’s another crab or two? You can easily keep five of them in that tank, you won’t have to upgrade for a while yet….”
Seeing as their living quarters aren’t quite complete yet, I think I’d best stick with what I’ve got.
What do the crabs eat?
Die-hard hermit crab people will think I’m evil, but I feed them commercial hermit crab foods. I supplement that with fresh fruit, veggies, and herbs (they’re crazy about cilantro!) and freeze-dried shrimp. They’re pretty omnivorous, but they don’t eat a lot at any one time.
That’s OK. I feed my dogs commercial dog food, but if I really loved them I would make their own food.
Although Buckley has a problem digesting grain, so the food we get him is so expensive it’s gotta make some die-hard people happy.
